The Bourne Appreciation

Of all the movies I have rewatched during social isolation, the Bourne trilogy has been a revelation. There are displays of brilliance that I just did not pay attention to when I watched these movies a decade ago. Then it was all about the car-chases and gritty fights. Revisiting them now, two things stand out.

First, the soundtrack. When the movies first came out, Extreme Ways got all the craze. But the entire background score is impressive. It has enhanced every frame, injecting meaning, projecting urgency, and pulling you in the middle of the action. I cannot imagine those scenes having the same impact without the music. Also, a great soundtrack to listen to while running. Thank you, John Powell.

Second, Europe. I couldn't have said this a few years ago. Bourne movies are an ode to the modern day Europe. I can't help but notice how lovingly, and accurately, they capture the everyday life bustling with activity. Taxis. Trams. Bridges, rivers, ferries. Police cars, sirens wailing in the distance. Winter. It lends authenticity to the premise. Much of the story wouldn’t happen if Bourne couldn’t blend in the crowd or travel to another country by road unchecked. Europe is practically a character in the story.

All in all, such fascinating movies! On a general note, it's interesting how you see old movies in a new light while watching them years later. That's how I have been passing time nowadays.
